The notion of voluntary simplicity hinges on the idea that knowing when you’ve had enough is the key to financial independence and to enjoying your stuff more. It’s not about renunciation of wealth or social engagement: it’s about focus. If you want to be able to work less, or retire early, the trick is to weigh out what you buy, what you need, and what you’ll want in he future: “To live more voluntarily is to live more deliverateley, intentionally and purposefully- in short, it is to live more conciously. We cannot be deliberate when we are distracted from life. We cannot be intentional when we are not paying attention. We cannot be purposeful when we are not being present. Therefore, to act in voluntary manner is to be aware of ourselves as we move through life.”
